Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Her father, who was a carnival barker, passed away when she was a small girl, requiring her mother to support the family by working as a waitress and cleaning woman. Ruth was a student and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. However, she left school after just two years to explore a career in acting. It was not without problems. When she was offered a job at New York as a model for a detective magazine, she had a difficult time trying to find opportunities on stage. Then in NYC, she was employed at a bar, as the check-in lady before resigning before moving to Boston. She worked as an usherette during the day and then performed at the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first permanent acting gig. She been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she studied drama.
